READER BAMBALL REFLECTS ON THE NEW ART ESTABLISHMENT:

‘The jaded, tired contemporary art world needs to be rocked by some sort of “signifier” like the 21st century version of “Fountain”. The mediocrity and aesthetic excess is too much. You want signifiers? I’ll give you signifiers. There’s so much good taste out there, we’re drowning in good taste. Where is R. Mutt when you need him (or her?). He started us down this road, tell us where it all ends. Please. Modernism reacted against the 19th century Academy, and 100 years later, art is being defined by the establishment academy once again, and this time it comes with a bunch of student loans to pay off. What’s a t-shirt cargo shorts and flip-flop wearing art world do now to rebel against established societal norms? Maybe wear top hats with man-burkas? Or has that already already been done?’
