‘THE IRONY OF YANA PEEL AS HEAD OF THE SERPENTINE IS THAT IF THE PEOPLE SHE IS EMPLOYED TO GET THE MONEY FROM PAID THEIR TAXES, THE SERPENTINE MIGHT BE ‘PROPERLY’ FUNDED BY THE STATE
OUR READER RANDALL MOTOROLA BANDA PARRISH SAYS:
Interesting that Yana Peel (whose brother in law / Tory-government backer, Poju Zabludowicz was questionned under oath for tax avoidance) is now heading the Serpentine.
(My comment: Who is Yana Peel? She is the co-founder of the Outset Contemporary Art Fund and is CEO at public debate forum Intelligence Squared. She will replace Julia Peyton-Jones, who steps down this month after 25 years as director of the Hyde Park institution. The link with Poju is interesting because her charities were vehicles of sponsoring art through tax credits. Peel, who was born in Russia, grew up in Canada and studied at LSE before working for Goldman Sachs, will work with artistic director Hans Ulrich Obrist. She said: “I am thrilled to be taking on the leadership of the Serpentine, an institution that I have admired and been involved with for so long. With Hans Ulrich as artistic director, I am fully committed to making the most exciting art and ideas of our time accessible to the broadest audiences.”
Outset provides a small group of private patrons with access to major names on the arts scene. The patrons paid thousands for the privilege, with the money going to galleries to buy work by up-and-coming artists.
This is funny because if the people she is employed to get money from (one would be forgiven for assuming this is her only qualification for the job?) paid their taxes, the Serpentine might be ‘properly’ funded by the state.
If this were the case, then the gallery wouldn’t have to suffer the cultural indignities of appealing to, and transmitting the ‘taste’ of an elite group of funders/backers back to them (or those that want to be like / sell to them…)
It might also widen the scope of HUO’s curatorial dragnet – beyond the played-out fig-leaf makers and generic gallerist landfill he trawls through shamelessly (The same artists his new bosses’ family, it would seem, have such a desperately-publicised socio-economic interest in…)
